Supported by Roots Ladakh, the Department of Wildlife, the Department of Tourism Kargil, WANT Drass, Drenmo Lodge, and Flame of the Forest Safari Lodge, the initiative brought together 15 young participants from various parts of Drass and other regions of Kargil. The comprehensive training covered the region’s history, culture, and biodiversity, and included sessions on wildlife photography, basic first aid, communication, and storytelling.

The program was designed not only to impart knowledge but also to inspire the youth to become independent entrepreneurs and ethical wildlife tourism leaders in their community. Expert speakers were invited to motivate and guide the participants, who are now poised to become strong advocates for conservation in the Drass valley.

Upon completion, each participant received a Nature Guide starter pack, which included binoculars, field guides, bags, jackets, and caps, symbolizing their readiness to embark on their new roles.

“This first-ever guide training program is part of our mission to upskill local youth and provide them with the tools to foster nature appreciation and protect their natural habitat by becoming ambassadors of their own homeland,” said Muzammil Hussain, Founder Trustee of the Himalayan Brown Bear Trust.

He further said that the program’s success marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainable tourism and conservation in Kargil, setting a high standard for future initiatives in the region.
